We live out in the country, in Southeast Missouri, so there’s farm fields all around us. We have another dog, named Summer, who would often take off with Abby to go on little country runs. It didn’t happen all the time, but they did disappear every once in a while. Normally, if Abby and Summer weren’t back within an hour, I would flag it to our neighbors or put a message out on Facebook saying to look out for them—but usually they’d turn up after a little while....

We got to know each other more, and as time went on, we became closer and closer. Rae lived at the bottom of the street my parents lived on, so we’d get off the bus at the same stop on the way back from nights out, walk the rest of the way home together and sometimes there would be a cheeky kiss. But it was never very serious back then, we were just teenagers being teenagers....
